In Rio is the absolute most spectacular city in the World and believe me, I have seen lots of cities around the World. We had great fun in Rio. The city was really expensive. We had to make sure we stayed in Ipanema or Leblon, as these were the only places considered safe for tourists and we had to pay the premium in these areas. We stayed in Ipanema. Copacabana
A Night of Samba
We wanted to go to a Samba club in Lapa so we were recommended Rio Scenarium. It was a really cool place with amazing authentic Brazilian atmosphere. We had a great time at this crazy Samba club. We danced until late in the morning. It was great fun! First of all, in Brazil, you cannot have no fun, because everyone around you has so much fun and it is so contagious. copacabana
Next day we took the tram up to Santa Teresa. This is an artsy neighbourhood. It could get slightly sketchy in the neighbourhood at night, but during the day was OK. The tram was full of kids who loved posing for photos.
We loved the art on the walls of Santa Teresa. We stopped by a traditional restaurant to try the moqueca do camarao, which is a traditional dish from Bahia.
It s heavy coconut stew with rice and shrimps. The portion we had was huge.
The Copacabana Palace Hotel
At night we went out to a famous bar at the Copacabana Palace Hotel and we had some amazing cocktails at the bar.
The bar was fancy and expensive. We met some Brazilian guys they were really nice to us. They did try to kiss us after a few sentences. Soon we realized that this was normal in Brazil that guys try to make out after barely saying hello. After a fun night, the guys drove us home in a bulletproof car. Bulletproof car is a pretty cool thing. I have never seen such a thing before. They told us that Rio was much more dangerous than we thought it was.
The Favella Tour
The next day we went on a Favella Tour in the mountains to see the shanty towns of Rio. The poor lives in these slummy neighbourhoods in Rio. They are usually involved with drug and arm dealing.
It was interesting and sad to see how these people live during the day, however, it was not the kind of place I want to be at night. They mostly live on the top of the hills so at least they have an excellent view of the beaches from up there.
We heard some horror stories about crimes in the favelas. They basically kill anyone who does not belong to their own community.
Biking Along Copacabana Beach
Once we got back to the city, we hired bikes and biked along the beaches in Ipanema and Leblon and Copacabana. I loved the city and the beaches and the views and the street art everywhere. We also visited the botanical garden (Jardim Botanico).
This is an amazing botanical garden and a must for everyone visiting Rio. It s a huge garden with statues, ponds, huge palm trees.
At night we went for a traditional Brazilian Churrascaria. They were serving all you can eat steak for less than $30. It was great and delicious, but we ate too much. The night ended at the London Bar at the Fasano Hotel with our new Brazilian friends. We met some more guys there who again tried to make out without really talking to us. I guess it is the norm around Brazil. We were very sad to leave Rio. It was a real paradise. We had our last acai before taking off, bought a pair of Havaiianas flip flops and headed back to the airport. Bye-bye paradise, bye-bye naughty boys, bye-bye delicious acai…. We will miss you!
