Venice Beach
Los Angeles is not only the capital of the film industry but also the home of a vibrant art scene, especially pop art and graffiti. Venice Beach is particularly the epicentre of street art with colorful graffiti all over it. Venice Beach has more street vendors selling art along the beach than anyone can imagine. You can see a variety of highly creative pieces along the boardwalk. The graffiti around the boardwalk are incredibly colorful and creative. Some of the murals are humongous. Some of my favorites are the following. There are free museums in Los Angeles and some that charge a small admission fee. You can observe lots of beautiful art for free on Venice Beach and in the galleries on La Brie Avenue. LACMA will not be free, but it s also worth a visit.
There are all sorts of artwork sold along the boardwalk. One artist decorated a small cart and puts it in display. Another one paints skateboards. There are lots of choices for the visitor.
La Brea Avenue
If you want to visit art galleries in LA, head to La Brea Avenue. It is full of art galleries displaying all sorts of pop art. Some of them are not great to be honest. On Thursday nights you can easily find a gallery opening party on La Brea Avenue. The art may not be very high quality, but that should not worry you as long as the champagne is flowing. If you want to see real high quality interesting art, then go to NY or Art Basel. I did find some interesting art pieces at the exhibit we went to at the LAB ART Gallery.
LACMA
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a pretty interesting place with some pretty cool art pieces. It is not free, but a must see for everyone, who visits LA. Sometimes you can catch a good temporary exhibit as well that makes your visit much more interesting. The museum has some interesting Miros, Kandinskys, even some Picassos as well as Pollocks. The collection of the museum is not bad at all, but not as great as the MoMA is in NY or the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It is however worth a visit, when you are in LA. The place also has a nice outside coffee shop, so it is a great place to hang out in the sun, when the weather is nice.
