First Fridays at the Guggenheim were my absolute favourite parties in New York. Solomon R Guggenheim Museum is usually referred to as the Guggenheim is one of the landmark buildings of New York City. The building of the museum was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and it was opened in 1939. Today it is a home of many Impressionist, post-Impressionist, Modern and contemporary art. The building has the shape of a cylinder. It is wider at the top than at the bottom and it was conceived as a “temple of the spirit”. Its unique gallery extends from ground level in a long, spiral along the outer edges of the building to end just under the ceiling skylight. First the building was a subject of controversy, as many claimed that the funky building will overshadow the museum’s art work.Guggenheim Museum New York

My absolute favorite parties were the Art After Dark Parties at the Guggenheim Museum parties. These took place every first Friday of the month. As a member of the museum, we had free entry to the party as well as free alcohol at the VIP area. The party usually started around 7pm and ended around 11pm. These parties were pre-parties for the night, before we would head out to the meat packing district or to some house party in downtown Manhattan. They invited a different DJ every month. The museum had a different art installation every month. The Guggenheim museum has a big empty space in the middle where they would hang all sorts of things. I saw an art installation there that had cars hanging from the ceiling upside down. It was very cool. I definitely recommend this party to everyone who likes to mingle with an eclectic artsy crowd while having fun in a beautiful artistic setting in one of the most amazing buildings of New York.
