Grandmaster Chime for the 175th anniversary

My favourite gallery in London, the Saatchi Gallery, held a free Patek Philippe watch exhibition between May 27th-June 7th 2015.

The luxury Swiss watch brand is one of the oldest, most expensive watch brands in the World. Visitors had the privilege to walk through an excellent free exhibit where they could follow through the history of the brand and learn about the art of handcrafted watch making. The company is a family venture that was started by Polish watchmaker Antoni Patek in 1839. He met French Adrien Philippe in 1845 and they co-founded Patek Philippe & Co in 1851.

The company has been owned by the Stern family since 1932. Queen Victoria was amongst the first collectors of the watch in the mid 19th century. The company is famous for inventing the perpetual calendar, split-second hand, chronograph, and minute repeater watches. Patek Philippe has produced some of the most expensive watches in the World. In 1999 Qatari royal family bought a Patek Philippe for $11 million. Their ultra-complicated pocket-watch that was produced for Henry Graves Jr was sold for $24 million in 2014.

The exhibition showcases the creative journey of Patek Philippe and it shows us how it evolved from a luxury pocket watch maker to an inventor of wristwatches. About 400 luxury watches are on display in 15 themed rooms. The exhibit recreated the company’s Geneva headquarters as well as its workshops.

On show is a complete collection of watches. The visitor can see the pocket watches that once belonged to Queen Victoria and other royals. You can also see the Grand Master Chime that was created for Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary. You can see how the different pieces are manually crafted together.

The visitor will learn the tedious and labour intensive detailed work that it takes to put together a Patek Philippe watch. The exhibit takes you through the company’s 175 year old history and innovation. It is a wonderful exhibit, a must for every watch afecionados.
