As you wonder down the wide corridors of the 500 year old monastery hotel of San Domenico Palace, you feel like you just flew back in time. The ancient walls and religious art around the hotel recalls the atmosphere of the old monastery. However, today the hotel is one of the most luxurious accommodation options in the city of Taormina. The hotel still preserved an old chapel, some of the old furniture of the monastery as well as some religious paintings. The 500 year old Dominican monastery was converted into a 5 star luxury resort over 100 years ago and since then it has hosted many celebrities and stars who travel to Taormina for the yearly film festival. The Taormina palace hotel is the most upscale hotel in this beautiful, charming town and one of the best ones on the island of Sicily. San Domenico Taormina
The hotel is located just behind the main square about 5 minutes walk away from the main pedestrian road of Taormina. The Duomo on the main square of Taormina is only a couple of minutes away from the hotel. One can find many beautiful shops and entertainment options within walking distance.
The hotel has an inner garden that is separated by a glass wall and it has beautiful trees with pink blooming flowers. Every night a pianist plays beautiful music to entertain the guests of the hotel in the garden. One can enjoy a romantic evening by staying in the courtyard of the hotel, listening to the beautiful music while sipping a cocktail.
The former church of the monastery was turned into a beautiful ball room. It can accommodate 400 people and it is often used as a venue for various events.
The hotel has three conference centers, Sala Etna, Castelmola and Stampa that can accommodate 80, 30, 30 guests respectively. Many conferences are hosted in this venue.
The Restaurants
The hotel has three beautiful restaurants. Principe Cerami is a two Michelin stars restaurant. It is located in a private and elegant dining room. In the Summer the restaurant in moved to the front terrace overlooking the Taormina bay and the Etna Volcano. It is ran by chef Massimo Mantarro. The dress code is elegant.
Les Bougainvillées – A restaurant that offers an incredible view of Taormina overlooking the bay. It serves Sicilian specialties and international dishes. The breakfast of the hotel is served in this romantic restaurant as well, therefore hotel guests can enjoy its gorgeous views. The lavish breakfast is served in four tables and the selection is incredible. One table has all the Sicilian specialities, another one has many different kind of breads, another one has only fruits, another table has all the warm food, such as eggs and sausages. My favorite breakfast option was the Sicilian Granita with Brioche.
Il Giardino dei Limoni – Is a rather casual restaurant by the swimming pool that serves Mediterranean and regional dishes as well as fresh caught fish every day. The restaurant has a beautiful view overlooking the Taormina bay. It is an ideal place for lunch.
The Garden
The hotel has an enchanting beautiful garden overlooking the sea. It often serves as a venue for weddings, and receptions. It is a magical and romantic place to wonder around the olive and lemon trees or spend time in the hammock reading your favorite novel.
The Bedrooms
The rooms are large and its furniture reminds you of the old monastery. The corridors are wide and they are beautifully lit up with many lights, making one wonder what it was like living in the old monastery. Many rooms have balconies overlooking the sea and Taormina. The rooms are spacious and furnished in a traditional style but with modern comfort and conveniences.
The staff is very kind and helpful. They speak perfect English and they have good suggestions for dinner and entertainment options around the town.
San Domenico Palace is an ideal place for a beautiful, relaxing stay. Highly recommended for honeymooners and couples who just want to enjoy the beautiful views of the sea and relax in the enchanting garden of the hotel or enjoy spectacular Sicilian food in one of the three restaurants of this beautiful hotel.
