Wonderful Things to See in Siem Riep: The Ancient Temples of Angkor Wat

March 3, 2017

I spent three days in Siem Riep visiting the main Siem Reap attractions, including the famous Angkor Wat. Besides visiting Angkor Wat, there were not too many things to do in Siem Reap. These temples are absolutely breath taking. They were built between the 9th and 13th century. Angkor was the capital of the Khmer Empire in Cambodia with a population of about 1 million people. When you are walking around there, you feel like you flew 1000 years back in time. All I can say about these temples, that I saw the pyramids in Egypt and the Maya temples in Mexico, but they were nothing compared to Angkor Wat. Seeing these temples for the first time will send a tingle down to your spine. Things to See in Siem Riep

Wonderful Things to See in Siem Riep: Angkor Wat

There were plenty of Angkor Wat tours to choose from, but I decided to venture out and discover the temples on my own. There were not many places to visit in Siem Reap besides Angkor Wat, so I dedicated my entire stay to visiting these beautiful ancient temples. On my first day, I visited the main temple in the middle (Angkor Wat) and another one that is famous because Tomb Raider and Two Brothers were shot there. It was called the Ta Prom. My favorite temple was the temple of thousand faces (Bayon). Siem Reap activities include visiting temples all day long. So after doing this for a few days, you might be a bit overwhelmed. Even though these temples are really beautiful. Here is a detailed guide to Angkor Wat if want to learn more about this place.

The next morning, the tuk-tuk driver picked me up at 5:00am and we went to Angkor Wat to see the sunrise. It was beautiful, but it was kind of intimidating to be there alone in the dark. Watching the sunrise in Angkor Wat was one of the best things to do in Siem Reap. Many tourists arrived soon. The sunrise was beautiful. I made friends with a group of Japanese tourists and every single one of them on the bus wanted a photo with me. In the end I also took a photo with the whole group in front of the bus. They were very funny. After that I visited temples after temples after temples. There were so many. They were all very beautiful. Around 7am I started walking in the woods (by myself – I was a little intimidated, because nobody was around me at all) and deep down in the forest I found one of the most beautiful temples I have seen so far. It was very tall and two giant trees were growing on it. It was amazing to discover something like this. It was interesting to see how nature takes over everything with time. Around 5pm I took the balloon up in the air to see the sunset. We were about 150 meter above the ground. The scenery was stunning. Hot-air ballooning was one of the top things to do in Siem Reap. The next day, I was looking for things to do in Siem Reap besides the temples.  So the tuk-tuk driver took me to the country side (about 35 km far from the city) and guess what, I saw more temples. It was nice to drive through the villages and see how the local people lived there. I saw all sorts of cows and other animals along the way. On the way back, I visited the Landmine Museum. If you are wondering what to see in Siem Reap, once you are templed out, definitely visit the Landmine Museum. It was very interesting.

In Cambodia there are many landmine victims, who lost their arms and legs, because of landmines. It is very sad to see those people. First, I was wondering what to do in Siem Reap at night after visiting the temples. So I went to a khmer (this is how they call the local food) restaurant to have my favorite meal. It is called Amok. It is a fish stew in coconut cream served in a dish made out of a banana leaf. After that I had my favorite dessert, warm coconut milk with tapioca and banana. It was so yummy.
