The Venice Film Festival is not only special, because it is the second oldest film festival in Europe after Cannes, but also because it takes place in the most romantic city in the World. It was my second time visiting this film festival and all I can say, it never disappoints, as there are so many amazing movies screened. Lots of incredible movie stars paid a visit, such as Johnny Depp, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhall, Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson. Venice Film Festival 2015
Best Movies of the Venice Film Festival 2015
The Everest
The Everest was screened in 3D on the opening night of the film festival. Italian president Matteo Renzi was present at the opening ceremony. Unfortunately the 3D projector broke down during the movie and it took them like 10 minutes to repair it. The whole audience was laughing when the projector stopped working. Renzi did not look so happy. The movie is a true story. It is a bit depressing as many people freeze in the mountain while attempting to hike the Everest. I have to be honest, I fell asleep twice during the movie, so I don’t think the movie was very engaging and I do not much more to tell you about it, as I was sleeping through most of it.
The Black Mass
Johnny Depp’s gangster movie The Black Mass premiered in the Venice Film Festival. It was also a true story about the life of James “Whitey” Bulger, who was a mobster in the US. He was wanted by the FBI throughout his whole life and finally captured at the age of 70. His brother (Benedict Cumberland) was an important politician at the same time, but he eventually had to resign, because of his brother’s questionable background. Johnny Depp gives a very good performance of the aging mobster. There is a decent amount of violence in the movie. I personally like Sicario better, when it comes to mobster movies, but The Black Mass was an interesting masterpiece as well. The cinematography and the acting was remarkable.
The Danish Girl
The Danish Girl with Eddie Redmayne was the absolute most beautiful movie I have seen this year. It is a true story of the Danish artist Lily Elbe, who had one of the first transgender operations in the 1930ies. He becomes the muse of his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander), who becomes a famous artist. Gerda supports her husband through his transformation from man to a woman. It is an amazing movie and it will surely win a few Oscars. Critiques say that Eddie Redmayne may win his second consecutive Oscar for the movie for his performance. His performance was better than it was in The Theory of Everything. It is a movie that everyone must see.
A Bigger Splash
Luca Guadagnino’s new movie A Bigger Splash is as Italian as it can get. The star-studded cast include Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. We see every main character naked throughout the movie. There is also lots of sex displayed. The movie is very entertaining. It is all about love, food and sex. It reminded me of Sorrentino’s Youth a little bit. The movie was very amusing, sort of bloody in the end and a bit shocking at times. Definitely worth watching if you want to see something really entertaining.
